FIVE YEARS OF FUNNY
Celebrating exactly five years since their first public performance in June 2019, Insert Laughter Here are presenting another night of improvised comedy fun and games, with their first ever free show on Wednesday 26 June at 7.30pm at The Hunter Club in Bury St Edmunds.. The group will be raising money for mental health charity Suffolk Mind by taking donations on the night, or with the option for up-front donations when booking tickets. The usual brightly-coloured chaos awaits, filling a room with laughter and supporting a great cause in doing so.
Insert Laughter Here specialises in what they call “colourful comedy chaos”. Using suggestions from the audience throughout the show for ingredients in their scenes, they play a series of short form improvisation games, some of which audiences might recognise from the likes of Whose Line is it Anyway, I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and Mock The Week, albeit all with the group’s own twists. They also have quite a few games they’ve made up themselves, including Sound Stage, Seconds from Disaster and the extra chaotic Roll With It - incorporating the results of a giant inflatable twenty-sided die into a fantasy scene. In all of these games the performers have absolutely no clue ahead of time what subjects or themes they will be performing with, which just helps to make it all even funnier.
Previous scenes have included complaining to Amazon about how much cardboard they use, a unique restaging of the iconic bow scene from Titanic, a people-eating espresso machine, a wild west style shootout in a morgue and tuna-toting delivery driving cats. Anything can happen when the audience are in charge, and (almost) no suggestion is off limits for these quick-witted performers. If you can think of it, Insert Laughter Here can make it happen. (Because of this unpredictability, the recommended minimum age for the audience is 16+ as scenes are likely to contain strong language and adult content.)
Insert Laughter Here was formed in Bury St Edmunds in February 2019, as an improvised comedy collective under the direction of Aaron Weight. Their recent London debut performances - two nights at The Museum of Comedy as part of Camden Fringe - were a resounding success. With their own-created long-form game, Spin-a-Play, they have created six “brand new” comedy plays, most recently including ‘Scandal in a Carriage’ - a period drama and ‘Spin City’ - a film noir. The group now comprises over 20 members around the country, and this will be their 22nd show within the five years since they started, not including several live-streamed informal jams during lockdowns.
Aaron wanted to make the fifth birthday show both a celebration of the milestone for the group, but also to take an opportunity to give something back, covering all production costs himself and donating 100% of money raised to a cause that means a lot to him and many other members in the group, Suffolk Mind. The show will also be the most performers in a single show yet, ensuring the night is as hilarious as it possibly can be.
Tickets are available via the group’s ticket provider at https://fixr.co/event/5th-birthday-celebration-improvised-comedy-show-tickets-42839190, with the option to book for free, or with up front donations to Suffolk Mind. The venue is The Hunter Club in Bury St Edmunds who pride themselves on being a fantastic place for local artists and who are longtime collaborators of Insert Laughter Here, having hosted shows as far back as their first year in 2019. The doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 7.30pm. The club’s bar will be opened if the audiences reaches at least 2/3rds capacity, so it’s really helpful if audience members can book tickets as far in advance as possible. Donations will be encouraged on the night, but are not mandatory.
